The concept of being on your own and getting somewhere is nice, but just having the character say "Damn I'm going the wrong way" to force players into one direction feels very bad gameplay-wise.
You are only disallowed to move north into the town at the start and western road you probably wanted to cross. I think its mentioned though that there is the frontline. Otherwise its only the terrain edges that are walled off.
In general terms its a question how much freedom go give the player (like can you skip tasks basically) - some even want us to limited the playable area in all missions (IF campaigns have this more or less but rather loose - like really far "borders")
